​The Haarlemse Kunst Salon (HKS) is a national juried exhibition open to all artists based in the Netherlands. The HKS was launched by the Dutch Atelier of Realist Art (DARA) as an initiative to promote representational art in the Netherlands that showcases both a high level of technical achievement, as well as individual artistry and creativity.

The HKS is open to all representational drawing and painting made with traditional media, and will be curated by a panel of jurors comprised of classically trained painters. Artists may enter up to 5 of your recently completed drawings and paintings for the opportunity to feature in the Kunst Salon, which will exhibit both live in Haarlem as well as online. Finalists' works will also appear in a full colour printed catalogue available for purchase.

Finalists are chosen from a jury of classically trained representational painters. 

Eligibility

You are eligible to participate if you are an artist  who lives and works within the Netherlands. You must be able to physically deliver your work, and collect unsold work, from the exhibition venue in Haarlem.

The HKS is exclusively for representational drawings and paintings made with traditional media.

Finalists Announced: 21 September 2026
Delivery of Work: 29 November to 1 December 2026 All work must be delivered in person.

Opening Night: 4 December 2026
The unveiling of finalists' work will be held in Haarlem, accompanied by food, drinks, and live music.
Exhibition Continues: 5 to 18 December 2026 Works are exhibited in person and online.

Collection of Unsold Work: 18 to 20 December 2026

Representational Art

The Haarlemse Kunst Salon was conceived as an opportunity to promote representational art in the Netherlands, which demonstrates both a high level of technical skill and unique artistic voice. "Representational art" means art that depicts recognisable subject matter, such as people or landscapes - in other words, non-abstract work. It can include work made in a realistic manner, but can also include looser, more impressionistic styles.

​The HKS is open to all representational drawings and paintings made with traditional media, meaning physical drawing or painting tools. Works which incorporate digital media are not eligible.

​Submission Fee

There is a submission fee applied when submitting an entry, which helps to cover the administrative and labour costs of organising the exhibition.

Standard Fee: € 40,-
Discount Fee: € 25,-
You are eligible for a discount if you have attended a course at the Dutch Atelier of Realist Art during the period of 2025-2026, and maintained an attendance rate of 80% or higher.

By paying the entry fee, each artist is able to submit a maximum of 5 works to be considered for the Kunst Salon.
