This painting is part of my Women of Stoicism series, a collection of portraits celebrating self-made women who have faced hardship and stand firmly on their own existence. The series explores a quiet kind of strength, one that is not defined by struggle itself, but by the grace, resilience, and dignity with which a woman moves through it.
This portrait is of my friend Carrie, whose presence has always struck me as powerful and luminous. When she enters a room, there is an unmistakable sense of light around her. She possesses a strength that feels both natural and deeply earned, shaped by becoming self-made from a young age and learning to navigate life on her own terms.
I wanted to portray not simply her appearance, but something of that presence: the quiet confidence, independence, and inner light that I see in her. I wanted to paint her portrait with that interplay of softness, the welcoming of light in her being, and the strength she carries.
